How to Use This Checklist
Before publishing any new post (and to audit your existing top 20 posts), run through these 25 items. The first 15 cover foundations. The last 10 are advanced techniques most mom blogs skip — which is why most mom blogs plateau.
Print this, bookmark it, or copy it into Notion as a template. Use it once per post.
📌 Key Takeaway: According to Backlinko’s analysis of 11.8 million Google search results, the top-ranking pages have averaged 1,447 words, with strong internal linking and proper schema markup. Mom blogs that systematically follow SEO checklists outrank competitors with 5x more content but no SEO discipline. For SEO fundamentals, see our SEO basics for mom bloggers.
Pre-Writing (Items 1-5)
1. Pick One Primary Keyword
Use a free tool like Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest, or Keysearch’s free tier. Aim for a keyword with:
- 100 to 1,000 monthly searches (for new blogs)
- Difficulty score under 30 (Ahrefs/Semrush) or “Easy” in free tools
2. Identify 3 to 5 Secondary Keywords
Search your primary keyword in Google and note:
- “People also ask” questions
- Related searches at the bottom
- Suggested searches in the search bar
These become your secondary keywords for H2 sections.
3. Confirm Search Intent
Search your keyword. Are the top 10 results:
- How-to guides?
- Listicles?
- Product reviews?
- Definitions?
Match the dominant format. Writing a how-to when Google is ranking listicles will not work.
4. Check Competitor Word Counts
Use a free tool like Word Count Checker or just paste competitors into ChatGPT to compare. Aim for the median word count of the top 5 results (or slightly higher).
5. Set Up Your URL Structure Before Writing
URL: yoursite.com/keyword-focused-slug
Rules:
- 3 to 6 words max
- Includes primary keyword
- Hyphens, not underscores
- No dates if the content is evergreen
Writing & On-Page Optimization (Items 6-15)
6. Use the Primary Keyword in the Title (H1)
Place the primary keyword in the first half of the title. Example: “Mom Blog SEO Checklist 2026: 25 Points to Audit Before Posting.”
7. Use the Primary Keyword in the First 100 Words
Google heavily weights early keyword placement. Mention your primary keyword naturally in the opening paragraph.
8. Use Variations Throughout
Sprinkle secondary keywords through H2s and body text. Avoid keyword stuffing — write naturally.
9. Optimize H2 and H3 Structure
- One H1 only (the title)
- 5 to 8 H2 sections
- H3s nest under H2s when needed
- Each H2 should have 1 to 2 keywords or close variations
10. Write a Compelling Meta Description (155-160 characters)
Include the primary keyword + a clear benefit. See our how to write SEO meta descriptions guide for templates.
11. Add an Image Alt Tag with Keyword
Every image needs alt text describing what it shows. Include the primary keyword on at least your hero image’s alt text.
12. Use Image File Names Strategically
mom-blog-seo-checklist-2026.jpg outperforms IMG_2349.jpg. Rename before uploading.
13. Compress Images Before Upload
Use TinyPNG, ShortPixel, or Smush plugin. Hero images: under 100 KB. Body images: under 50 KB.
14. Add 3 to 5 Internal Links
Link to relevant existing posts. Each internal link uses descriptive anchor text (not “click here”).
15. Add 2 to 3 External Authority Links
Link to .gov, .edu, established research sites, or recognized industry sources. Open in new tab.
Advanced & Technical (Items 16-25)
16. Optimize Featured Snippet Eligibility
For listicles: use numbered lists. For definitions: define the term in 40 to 60 words near the top. For tables: use clear HTML tables.
17. Add Schema Markup
At minimum, use Article schema (most themes add automatically). For FAQ-style content, add FAQ schema. For step-by-step guides, add HowTo schema. Tools like RankMath generate this automatically.
18. Include a Table of Contents for Long Posts
Posts over 2,000 words benefit from a clickable TOC. Plugins like Easy Table of Contents handle this. It increases time on page and earns sitelinks in Google search results.
19. Optimize for Mobile
Most mom audiences read on phones. Check that:
- Paragraphs are 2 to 4 sentences max
- Headings are clear
- Images do not overflow
- Tap targets (buttons, links) are big enough
20. Check Page Speed
Run your URL through PageSpeed Insights. Aim for mobile score 70+. Common fixes:
- Compress images
- Remove unused plugins
- Use a caching plugin (WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, or LiteSpeed)
21. Add an FAQ Section at the Bottom
Pull 3 to 5 questions from “People also ask” and answer them in 2 to 3 sentences each. This often captures featured snippets.
22. Make Sure the Post Has Author Schema
Display an author byline with a link to an author bio page. Google’s E-E-A-T guidelines weight author credibility.
23. Submit the URL to Google Search Console
After publishing, submit the new URL via Google Search Console > URL Inspection > Request Indexing. Speeds up indexing dramatically.
24. Update Your Pinterest Pin Strategy
Create 3 to 5 vertical Pinterest pins for the post, each with a different title hook. Schedule via Tailwind or pin manually over 2 to 3 weeks.
25. Build a Single High-Quality Backlink (Long-Term)
Within 30 days of publishing, secure at least one backlink to the post from:
- A guest post on a related blog
- A relevant resource roundup
- A subreddit or Quora answer
A single quality backlink can move a post from page 3 to page 1.
The Visual Checklist
Tools That Make This Faster
- RankMath or Yoast SEO (WordPress plugin) — covers items 6 to 15 automatically with checks
- Google Search Console (free, must-have)
- Google Keyword Planner (free)
- AnswerThePublic (free tier)
- TinyPNG / Squoosh (image compression)
- Tailwind (Pinterest scheduling)
- PageSpeed Insights (free Google tool)
- Surfer SEO (paid, advanced content scoring)
What to Do When You Are Auditing Old Posts
Pick your top 10 to 20 posts (by traffic, conversions, or impressions in Search Console). For each:
- Run through items 6-25
- Note what is missing
- Spend 30 minutes updating each post
- Update the publish date in WordPress to the audit date
- Re-submit the URL in Search Console
This “post refresh” strategy can drive 30 to 50%+ traffic increases on existing content with no new writing.
Most Common Mistakes Beginners Make
- Skipping keyword research entirely
- Stuffing the primary keyword 30+ times
- Writing under 1,000 words on competitive terms
- Forgetting internal links to and from new posts
- Using “click here” as anchor text
- Massive uncompressed images that slow page speed
- No alt text on images
- Generic meta descriptions (“Read more on the blog!”)
- Publishing and never updating
- Ignoring Pinterest as part of SEO strategy

Final Thoughts
SEO is one of the few things in mom blogging where the rules are explicit. Master this checklist and you will outrank 80% of mom blogs that “wing it.” Pick 5 items from this list to apply to your next post, then add more each time. By month 3 it becomes a habit, not a list.
